Crew Chief Woodward Helps Sophomore’s Late Model Learning Curve

EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. – When 16-year-old Late Model driver Emily Packard buckles into her race car, she might as well be settling into a chair in the front of a classroom at U-32 High School.

For the sophomore Late Model driver, who last year competed weekly at two different northern New England tracks and qualified for her very first ACT Late Model Tour race, she has a veteran presence atop her pit box coaching her through the ins and outs of competing in one of the region’s most competitive stock car racing divisions. Five-time ACT champion crew chief Neal Woodward has been with Packard every step of the way.

“Neal is one of the smartest guys I’ve ever met, honestly,” said Packard, who was named the 2012 Vermont Motorsports Magazine Rookie of the Year. “He’s always supported me. Having him at the track is huge, and having him here at the shop to work on the cars and get them right is a big deal, too. He knows what I want. Even when I’m at school, he’s working on things to make the car the way I want it. Read Full Article →

Burlington, VT – 2012 American Canadian Tour Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr., (photos 10 and 12) and 2012 Série ACT Castrol Champion Patrick Laperle (photo 8) were the stars of the ACT Banquet at the Doubletree Inn in Burlington, VT on Saturday, January 12th, earning the highest awards for their respective titles. ACT awarded over $700,000 in point funds and event purses to teams in 2012.

Helliwell was honored after one of the most entertaining point-battles of ACT’s history, beating out eight-time Tour Champion Brian Hoar in an epic battle for his first-ever ACT Championship.  He won four races in 2012, including his first-career ACT victory, and only finished worse than seventh once.  He won $10,000 for his ACT Championship, but also picked up an additional $5,000 from the Ford point fund for winning the Ford Blue Oval Challenge for a record third time in a row (photo 7).
