HENDSBEE WINS SPOTLIGHTED NEW ENGLAND FOUR CYLINDER PROSTOCK FEATURE

By Lisa Maguire

Despite forecasted rain, the weather at Wiscasset Speedway was fine last Saturday night. Fans and drivers alike gathered at the track, and a great show full of racing action ensued. On the agenda were the group one division of racing, including: New England Four Cylinder Prostock, Prostock, Thunder Four Mini’s, and Napa Super Street. The flex race of the week was the Wicked Good Vintage Racers, presenting two races for the gathered crowd.

Also announced Saturday Night was the recipient of the July Four Season Synthetic “Driver of The Month”. The driver for the month of July was Napa Super Street driver, Josh Bailey. Bailey was presented with a trophy, and a $100 gift certificate redeemable for Amsoil products.
First on the track were the New England Four Cylinder Prostocks in a Spotlighted thirty-five lap feature race. Starting at the pole was the #4 of Connor Wenners. To his right was the # 14 of Bob Patten. Behind was the #99 of Cameron Folsom. Folsom spun out on the start, and went to the back. The #5 of Cody Billings advanced into third on the restart. On the opening lap, Billings passed Patten for second on turn four. Then, during lap four, the #9X of Brooke Knowles passed Patten on the inside for third. Brooke Knowles went high during lap eleven, and attempted to pass Billings. However, she couldn’t complete the pass and the #8 of Craig Dunn moved inside and passed her for third during lap fourteen.

There was a caution during lap eighteen when the #27 of Jacob Hendsbee spun on the track. Hendsbee went to the back. When racing resumed on the track, Billings was slow off the start, and traffic jammed up behind him, and those on the inside lane shot to the lead. Wenners remained in the lead. Dunn advanced to second, and the #24 of Jeff Prindall advanced to third.

Lap twenty-one saw Dunn head to the outside to pass Wenners, but he couldn’t complete the pass and Prindall got under him. However, a caution was called, and Dunn kept second for the restart. Dunn initially took the lead when racing action resumed on the track, with Prindall and the #0 of Alex Waltz in hot pursuit. Wenners was shuffled to the back. Then Prindall passed Dunn for the lead during lap twenty-five. Waltz then passed Dunn for second during lap twenty-eight. Wenners came back from behind and passed Dunn on turn three for third during lap twenty-eight.

Wenners spun coming out of turn four during lap thirty-one, and it brought out the caution. Dunn advanced to third. On the ensuing restart, Waltz passed Prindall on the outside of turn four for the lead. However, Prindall fought back and the pair raced door to door around the track. Prindall took the lead back during lap thirty-three, but still the pair battled at the front. Behind, Hendsbee passed Dunn for third.

During the final lap, Prindall and Waltz got loose and made contact, and the pair spun onto the front stretch. Hendsbee went around them, and took the checkered for the win. The #98 of Kamren Knowles placed second. Patten placed third. Hendsbee was second in points coming into Saturday’s race, with 426 points. Kamren Knowles was point leader with 460. Prindall was third in points with 352.

Post-race Hendsbee said, “It was an unexpected win! We started at the back, and then I went to the back. I was able to make my way back up through, but when the two at the front took each other out, it was unexpected. I was wicked happy, and my dad was too. We’ve been waiting for a win. I want to thank my dad. He does all the work on the car. I want to thank Ron Bryant, and my family for supporting me. I want to thank all my fans, and my baseball team for being there for me. I also want to thank my sponsor, Paul’s Pick Apart.”

The Wicked Good Vintage Racers made an appearance at Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday. Two twenty lap feature races were presented to the fans. The first race was a Late Model and Modified feature. Starting at the pole was the #0JR of Dean Grant. In second was the #96 of Steve Kahler. Behind him was the #35 of Dennis Fish. During the opening laps, Kahler and Fish battled for second. Kahler ultimately kept his spot, and then challenged Grant for the lead.

During lap nine, Kahler passed Grant for first. However, there was a lot of movement and shuffling for position. Fish fell behind and the #82 of Bobby Symonds advanced to third. Grant slipped back and the #73 of Mark Theranault moved into second, passing Symonds to do so. The #7 of Steve Reny was moving up quickly from his last place start. During lap ten he passed Symonds for third. During the same lap, he quickly passed both Theranault and Kahler and took the lead.

Symonds passed Kahler for second during lap eleven. There was a caution during lap thirteen, and on the restart, the #13 of Jody Lewis passed Kahler for third. However, Lewis spun out and a caution was called during lap sixteen. The #2 of Kevin Waterhouse advanced to third. When racing action resumed on the track, Waterhouse went into a spin coming out of turn one. Kahler struck Waterhouse and flipped into the turn two wall, bringing out a red flag caution. Kahler walked away unharmed.

The #420 of Keith Smalley advanced to third for the restart. However, during lap seventeen, Theranault passed Smalley for third on the inside of turn two. Race leaders remained constant until the finish. Reny took the win. Symonds placed second. Theranault finished in third.

The Wicked Good Vintage Racers presented the Outlaw class next. This twenty lap event began with the #64 of Scott Tucker on the pole. To his right in second starting position was the #86 of Ryan Chadwick. In third was the #71 of Arthur Hannaford. When the green flag flew over the track, Chadwick quickly took the lead. Tucker fell back and the #3 of Paul Pierce advanced to second. Pierce then passed Chadwick for the lead.

During lap four the #1 of Bob Guyon passed Tucker for third. However, coming quickly from the back was the #? of James Osmond. Osmond passed Guyon for third during lap six. Osmond then passed Chadwick for second during lap nine. Osmond looked up the track, determined to take the lead. Osmond passed Pierce on the inside of turn three during lap eleven for the lead. Once Osmond had the lead, he never relinquished it, and there were no additional leader changes. Osmond took the win. Pierce placed second. Chadwick rounded out the top three in third.

A forty lap Prostock feature was the next crowd pleaser. Starting at the pole was the #96 of Wyatt Alexander. In second was the #15X of Scott Chubbuck. In third was the #32 of Mike Orr. The green flag waved over the track and the cars roared off the start. Chubbuck passed Alexander on the inside of turn two during lap three for the lead. The #1 of Jeff Burgess passed Orr on turn two during lap four for third.
During lap twelve, Alexander headed to the outside in a bid for the lead, but he couldn’t complete a pass. While on the outside, Burgess moved up behind Chubbuck, and Alexander slipped to third. There was a caution during lap twenty-four when Orr and the #72 of Charlie Colby made contact. On the restart, Alexander and Burgess raced for second, and Alexander, on the inside, had the advantage and took the spot. Burgess moved to third. There was another caution during lap twenty-nine, for what appeared to be a mechanical malfunction. This caution left the #99 of Ajay Picard on its roof in turn one. Picard was unharmed, but the race car suffered damage.

When racing action resumed on the track, Alexander and Chubbuck raced for the lead, with Chubbuck ultimately pulling ahead and retaining his lead. Burgess also went under Alexander and took second. Race order remained constant through the finish. Chubbuck took the win. Burgess placed second. Alexander took third. Race results are unofficial pending engine test results.

In the point race, Burgess was in the lead with 424 points. In second was Andy Saunders of the #01. Saunders entered Saturday’s race with 402 points. James Osmond was third in points with 384 points. Osmond drives the #05 out of Wiscasset.

After race time, Chubbuck said, “It was a pretty good race. There were a lot of cautions, but I was up ahead away from it all. I want to thank my boy, Garett, it’s all for him.”

Wiscasset’s entry level class, the Thunder Four Mini’s, were next on the track, participating in a twenty lap feature event. Starting at the pole was the #68 of Jeff Minchin Jr. Behind him was the #26 of Michael Golding. In third was the #58 of David Greenleaf. When racing began, there was some action on the track. The #44 of David Cook passed Greenleaf on the inside of turn two for third. There was a caution during lap three. When racing resumed on the track, Cook continued his advance up the track and passed Golding on the inside for second. Golding fell back another position when the #31 of Leandra Martin passed him on the inside of turn three during lap four.

Cook set his sights on the lead, and passed Minchin on the inside of turn four during lap fourteen, for first. Minchin fell back when Martin passed him during lap fifteen for second. Coming up from behind was the #113 of Cody Tribbet. Tribbet had started in eighth, and passed Minchin during lap fifteen for third.

Cook claimed his first Thunder Four win at Wiscasset this season. Point leader, Leandra Martin, placed second. Coming in third was Cody Tribbet.

Second in points in the Thunder Four division was Michael Harrison with 410 points, forty below Martin. Harrison placed eighth in Saturday’s race. Third in points was the #04 of Curtis Anderson. Anderson placed seventh in Saturday’s race.

Cook said after the race, “It was pretty amazing. I started fifth, and I took the lead in lap fourteen, and I never looked back. It was awesome since I finished dead last in the heat. I want to thank my parents, Shawn and Kathy. I want to thank my grandparents. My brother and sisters, Tire King Skowhegan, Speedmaster Racing, Shawn’s Automotive Hobbies, my nephew Brody, Logan, my niece Sadie, and everyone that helps me out. I like this track. Anybody from anywhere can come here and race clean. There is a good program here.”

Rounding out the evening’s entertainment under the bright lights of Wiscasset was a twenty-five lap Napa Super Street feature race.

Starting at the pole was the #88 of Jamie Norton. To his right was the #13 of David Doherty. Behind was the #06 of Zac Poland. Doherty took the lead during the opening lap. The #02 of Jason Curtis moved up to second and the #2 of Josh Bailey advanced to third.

There was a caution during lap sixteen when the #85 of Kenny Harrison went off the track. When racing action resumed on the track, Curtis took the lead. Doherty was slow to start and the #38 of Dan Trask went outside and ran up the track to second. The #5 of Mark Lucas followed Trask and took third. Lucas moved to the outside during lap twenty and passed Trask on the outside for second. There were no additional leader changes throughout the race. Curtis took his first Napa Super Street win at Wiscasset this season. Lucas placed second. Trask finished in third.

Bailey was point leader going into Saturday’s race, only twenty-eight points ahead of the #1 of Adam Chadbourne. In third was Curtis with 320 points, one-hundred four points below Chadbourne.

Curtis said, “I knew we had a fast car to start with this week, and knew that if we kept everything clean and kept to the track, we’d have a good chance to win. That is exactly what we did. We made a lot of adjustments throughout practice. The team of the #38 lent me a hand, and made the car even faster- and we won! I need to thank my sponsors: Dennett, Craig, and Pate Funeral Home, Cosmotech, Maine Chimney Repair, and Buzzy’s Barber Shop. I need to thank Melissa, Dennis, and Jeff Burgess also.”
