fasjfasfasKurt Hewins of Leeds and Brenton Parritt of Steuben each won the extended length feature events in their respective divisions at Speedway 95 Sunday afternoon on Veteran’s Remembrance week-end at the Speedway, but in both cases, the win came after a late race caution and a short sprint to the checkers.
In the Ikey Dorr Memorial 100 lap Strictly Street event, Hewins and Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs dominated the top spot in the 31 car starting field for the entire distance. Hewins took off from the outside pole and led laps 1-16 that were marred with early race cautions. On lap 17, Seekins took over the top spot and held it through several more caution periods until a caution on lap 57. On that restart, Hewins wrestled the lead from Seekins and held it until the yellow flew again on lap 97, setting up a three lap dash for the $3000 first prize. Hewins and Seekins battled side by side to the end, where Hewins, an Oxford Plains Speedway regular, beat the Speedway 95 veteran by half a car length. Seekins finished second, taking home $2000 for his efforts, with 2014 Speedway 95 Strictly Street champion Alex Berry of Harrington taking home $1000 for his third place finish. Rounding out the top five were 2013 Ikey Dorr race winner Maurice Young of Chelsea in fourth and Glenburn’s Jordan Pearson finishing fifth. Burnham’s Chris King finished sixth, seventh was Bimbo Look of Jonesport, eighth place went to Bradley Norris of Ellsworth, ninth was Kris Matchett of Skowhegan and tenth spot was taken by Geoffrey Rollins of Groton Mass.

In the 150 lap Judy’s Restaurant/Cap’s Tavern 150 lap Late Model event, Hermon’s Mike Hopkins, the track’s 2011 Late Model Champion, led the first 142 laps of the race until circumstances unraveled his stronghold on the lead. After two failed attempts at a clean restart, Head Flagman Jordan Harnish sent Hopkins and Milo’s Nick Jenkins, the second place runner at the time, to the rear of the lead lap cars. Jenkins was unable to restart due to mechanical issues with his car, and he retired from the race. Hopkins restarted fifth, but quickly moved to second and chased Parritt down, racing side by side with him over the final three laps, with Parritt, the 2014Speedway 95 Late Model Champion, nipping him at the line on the final lap. After crossing the finish line, Hopkins’ car got loose and struck Parritt’s in the right rear, sliding Parritt’s car sideways and into the first turn wall. Hopkins was initially disqualified by Harnish for unsportsmanlike conduct, but a conference after the race with both drivers and the flagman determined that it was a racing accident caused by hard driving for the win, and Hopkins was restored to his second place finish. Bradley’s Deane Smart drove a steady race for all 150 laps and finished in the third spot, with 2013 Late Model Champion Andy Saunders of Ellsworth in fourth. Harrington’s Andrew McLaughlin, who ran in the second spot until late in the event, finished fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Rowland Robinson Jr. of Steuben in sixth, Nick Jenkins of Milo 7th, Corinna’s Paul White 8th, Hermon’s John Curtis Jr. 9th and Winterport’s Ryan Deane in tenth.
