The extreme heat didn't stop the Monsta Mini's from hitting the track and putting on a cool show for the Four Cylinder National Qualifier. The twelve competitors showed just how much race car drivers ARE real athletics. Lewis Batchelder returned to the Unity Raceway oval in 2008 blazing a fast pace in the first heat race for a win. The second heat race had Tim Robinson return to his winning ways by taking the win. The feature saw Robinson take an early lead. The first caution flag would fly when a spinning Marcus Lowe would tag the #81 of Dylan Lancasater. The restart saw Robinson and Batchelder go door to door. On lap 7, Batchelder would take the lead. Duane Dunifer, returning from his fine run of last week, was gaining on the two leaders. This run would be short lived as Dunifer retired to the pits with engine problems. Jason Trundy, in his 2008 Unity Raceway debut, would start reeling in the leaders. Batchelder and Robinson would race nose to tail for many laps. Robinson would retake the lead. Batchelder's machine was starting to feel the heat of the day. Robinson would cross the stripe first, with Batchelder a close second. Trudy would take his first trophy of the 2008 season in third. Wiscasset regular, Dylan Lancaster, would finish fourth, with rookie Markus Lowe in fifth.
The debut of the Limited Division was a success. It was a fine mix of race cars from area tracks. The eight competitors would put on a great show. The heat race was won by former Unity Raceway mini stock driver, Frankie Moulton. The feature would have many drivers getting accustom to the third mile track. Scott Modere jumped to an early lead with Moulton in tow. The first yellow for debris would have Dustin Hubbard going up and over the #03 of Jerry Robbins. This would force Hubbard into the turn 1 bank and cut his day short. This restart would would have the #24 machine of Deane Smart taking the lead. Smart and Modere would race side by side for many laps. The #08 of Joe Allard was catching the leaders with this side by side action. Smart would take the lead for good as the Modere machine was starting to get loose. Allard would follow the two across the line for third place. The #03 would recover from his first lap mishap for fourth, with Joey Doyon rounding out the top five.
The Sportsman division would again have Brad Bellows from South China taking the heat race win. Bellows would take the lead in the feature with Mark Dodge right on his bumper. The race for third was a tight one. Bangor regulars, Kris Watson and John Kalel lll, would put on a fine show. Bellows lead would increase as Dodges machine would start getting loose on the hot track. Watson and Kalel would race side by side for many laps. A slight tap to the rear of Watson machine by the #2R of Ryan Robinson would send him up the track and Robinson took over third. Dodge's machine is very loose causing him to spin in turn #2. Bellows would again take the lead. Robinson and Watson would race for the second spot. Bellows cruised to his second win of the season. Watson beat Robinson to the line for second. New comer, John Kalel lll, would take home fourth and following in fifth was the loose machine of Mark Dodge.
The Late Model Pro 4 division put on another amazing show. Parkman's Bill Ellis showed he was paying attention to substitute flagman, Buster Roy, when he took off in the heat race. Steve Rackliff soon reeled in Ellis cruising to a heat race win. The green flag in the feature would be short lived as the #4 of Mark Davis would spin in front of the pack out of turn 4. Cary Davis would prove that his engine problems of last week were a thing of the past. The #6 machine would take the lead and never look back. Rookie driver, Ben Clark, would show that he knows his way around the track. The #21 would settle in for second and start looking for the leader. Davis would catch lapped traffic that would pull Clark even closer. Last weeks front runners, Jimmy Dennis and Steve Rackliff, were looking to catch the lead pair from the rear of the field. When the checkers flew, it was Davis the winner with Ben Clark in second. This would make Clark's cheering section very happy as this was his first career trophy. Dennis would beat Rackliff to the line with Bill Ellis finishing fifth.
The Wildcat division would welcome back Carl McAlpine to the race track. Carl would take the lead and never look back for his first heat race win of the 2008 season. The feature would have McAlpine again taking the early lead. Dustin Hubbard would look to the front from his rear starting position. McAlpine's lead would be short lived has Hubbard catches him on lap 10 and takes the lead. McAlpine would again take the lead as Hubbard has problem with lapped traffic. McAlpine would drift wide between turn 1 and 2. That was just what Hubbard needed to retake the lead for good. McAlpines machine would develop a right front tire problem but still hung on for second. Kathy McIntire would take home her first Wildcat trophy in third. Newcomer, Mike Shaw, would take the stripe in fourth with Craig Turner following in his 88x machine for fifth.
The Enduro class would again have teen age driver, Alex Fernald, taking the checker flag. Adam Moore finished his first race with a second place trophy. Rob Paddack returned to racing with a fine third place finish.
The Wicked Good Antique Racing series returned to Unity Raceway. The series returned in fine fashion bringing 18 competitors. The Bomber division had the #420 of Keith Smalley using lapped traffic to take the heat race win. The Modified division would X88 take the lead in lapped traffic and never look back. The Bomber feature would again have the #420 showing the lead with the #7 in tow. The #7 of Bob Cercena would try the outside line, but get loose and end up in the #1 bank. Smalley would have problems with lapped traffic on the last lap and loose the lead to the #62 of Alan Gassett. The #99 of Mark Collins would follow the pair for third. The Modified division would also have a strange finish. The #2 of Jim Sprague would lead almost the entire race with the X88 following in a close second. The X88 would get loose on the last lap and spin in turn 4. The second position would be brought home by the 88 with the #13 of former Unity Raceway driver, Robert Hills, finishing in third.
Unity Raceway's next race will start it's Summer Thrilla racing series June 19, with Friday night racing starting June 20.
