COASTAL 200 TO HIGHLIGHT 2007 SEASON AT WISCASSET RACEWAY

In less than a month engines will come to life and Wiscasset Raceway will usher in the start of another Maine stock car racing season. Race fans and drivers throughout northern New England are hoping that the recent mid-March snowstorm will be the last and they can set their sights on the start of the 2007 schedule. Wiscasset Raceway will continue its tradition as the first Maine track to open its gates with practice day set for Saturday April 7th and then opening day Saturday April 14th at 2:00pm.

Delwin Philbrick Well Drilling of Sidney will sponsor opening day, replacing Strong Chevrolet who had been the opening day sponsor for the past 17 years. Philbrick is adding an additional $1000 to the opening day Late Model purse in memory of his father Clarence, giving Wiscasset’s top division a nice $1700 winners check to shoot for. While the 2007 Wiscasset Raceway schedule will give each of the track’s six weekly divisions an opportunity to take center stage, the highlight of the year will be the return of a Memorial Day weekend racing tradition; the Coastal 200 Sunday May 27th. Harry C. Crooker of Topsham has signed on to become the title sponsor with $10,000 going to the winner of the 200-lap Late Model Sportsman main event at Maine’s fastest track. The Coastal 200 had established itself as a major jewel in the northern New England racing scene from 1993 thru 2003, but was dropped when Wiscasset eliminated Prostocks. With the growth of Late Model Sportsman or LMS cars as the premier division at most tracks, track promoter/owner Dave St Clair agreed to bring back the popular event. Past winners of the Coastal 200 include Scott Chubbuck, Stan Messerve, Ralph Nason, Jim McCallum, and Johnny Clark. Other major events scheduled for the 2007 season include the Hight Chevrolet 100 for Super Streets on June 2nd and a Labor Day weekend Twin 100’s for the Late Model and Super Street divisions.

For the first three weeks of the season Wiscasset will drop the green flag at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoons and will then move to its regular 6:00pm start time beginning in May. The track’s six weekly divisions will once again include Late Model Sportsman, Super Streets, Strictly Streets, Stock Mini’s, Ladies Division and Teen Division. Other touring divisions and special events will fill out the 2007 schedule including The NELCAR Legends, the Quirk Super Mini Cup Series and the Bailey’s Midcoast Mini Cup Series. Wiscasset will mix in five double point nights, a family fun night with driver autographs, a late summer car show, a special cross promotion event with Richmond Raceway, and the annual fireworks show.
